The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. This was a very pleasant surprise in a very busy season of big-name releases.“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. You can only play two players on the same system, so you'll need to go online if you want to have a fellowship of three people, but that's the only issue with the multiplayer I could find. LOTR: War in the North is an easy call: if you want to kill your way through Middle Earth and have a buddy or two who wants to come along, this is a must-buy. This may claim to be a separate story, but it leans heavily on the original films for inspiration. If you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings movies, you're going to be in heaven fighting through some of the notable locations from that saga. The challenge maps that send wave after wave of enemy at you are much more fun, and add a good amount of replayability to the game. You'll find a fetch quest here and there, but you can skip these unless you're focused on finding everything possible in the game. There is a conversation system, but there isn't much at stake with your choices, and having to get your gear repaired from time to time is more of an annoyance than a game mechanic. You'll also befriend a great eagle named Belaram who you can call into battle, and watching the majestic beast swoop down and knock out enemies is a wonderful sight. Each of the three characters has different attacks and defensive moves, so you'll be able to work together as a cohesive fighting force once everyone understands their role. The combat may remain the same throughout the game, but that isn't an issue when it's so satisfying. This is offset by the varied and often beautiful environments you'll explore, and the loot you'll find and buy to boost your character's abilities. Combat can become repetitious, and it can feel like you're killing the same type of enemy over and over. The game's weaknesses come from its genre, and are to be expected. Single-player fans should spend their time on another title. This is a title you're going to enjoy if you play with others. The single-player mode quickly becomes a grind as you slice your way through all the orcs, goblins, and trolls the story puts in your way, but things become engaging once you're playing alongside a friend or two either online or on the same console. Each character has strengths and weaknesses, and you gain levels to beef up your character and unlock new abilities and attacks. If you play by yourself the game will simply take over for the other two characters there will always be all three members of the fellowship fighting through the levels. What's important is that the game carries a Mature rating for violence, and you get to put your sword, axe, and magic through hordes of bad guys in a very satisfying manner. (During our time playing we simply referred to them as not-Gimli, not-Legolas, and not-Aragorn.) The story doesn't really matter, so it's not worth spending a ton of brainpower trying to work out how all the events fit into the larger picture. The game focuses on a new fellowship made of a dwarf, an elf, and a human ranger. The game deals with some of the events hinted at in both the books and the movies, and you'll bump into familiar characters as you slice your way through the forces of darkness. was smart to give them a chance to create an action game set in Middle Earth, and War in the North is available now on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Snowblind Studios created the wonderful Champions of Norrath and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for the PlayStation 2-this is a company that knows a thing or two about creating fun hack-and-slash titles.
